The Importance of Preschool

Preschool(1).jpgThere is a lot of information out there about preschool, and debates about whether or not it is really important in a child’s development. But all of it boils down to one question for most parents: is preschool right for my child?

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy, with locations in Valrico and Circa/Fishhawk, wants to help. Here are a few questions most parents ask, to help you decide what is right for your child.

1. What is the difference between preschool and daycare? For many parents, the confusion starts before they even being to consider a preschool. The terms preschool and daycare are not interchangeable, despite sometime being used that way. A daycare is a place where parents — usually working parents — leave their babies and toddlers during the day when they can’t be home to care for them. A preschool, on the other hand, is an educational center, where children come to learn, whether or not their parents need someone to watch them while they work. While daycares are generally full-time, year-round centers (parents don’t get to take the summers off!) preschools generally follow the same type of schedule other schools do, with sessions held September through May in most locations.

2. Why is preschool important? While socialization can happen in a wide variety of settings, preschools such as Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy, offer children a chance to learn how to interact and work with others in a controlled setting. They are learning to share and contribute to the group, in addition to being exposed to reading, writing, math and other subjects. And children who are exposed to these subjects in a preschool setting tend to do better in those subjects later. “Children who attend high-quality preschool enter kindergarten with better pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not," said National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) director W. Steven Barnett, PhD.

3. What will my child really learn? Beyond socialization and an early exposure to the subjects they’ll need later in life, studies have shown that preschool helps children learn to problem solve. It is a place where they can begin to explore the world around them, encounter problems and then realize they are capable of figuring out the solutions on their own. This is a critical skillset that has huge benefits to learning early in life. “"Kids in preschool discover that they are capable and can do things for themselves — from small tasks like pouring their own juice and helping set snack tables to tackling bigger issues like making decisions about how to spend their free time," said Angela Capone, PhD, senior program manager at Southwest Human Development's Arizona Institute for Childhood Development, in Phoenix. "Plus, 4- and 5-year-olds have begun asking some wonderful questions about the world around them — what happens to the water after the rain? Do birds play? Quality preschools help children find answers through exploration, experimentation, and conversation.”

At the end of the day, it boils down to a simple fact that the vast majority of children learn better by doing something they find interesting, rather than having someone show them the same concepts. Preschools are designed to help reach kids where they are, giving them fun activities that they don’t even realize are teaching moments. It can instill a sense of curiosity and love of learning that will help them throughout their entire life.
