Sight Words for Pre-K

You may or may not have heard of the term “sight words” before. Pre-k sight words are some of the most commonly used words that children will encounter in the world around them — words found in the books and other materials geared toward their age group. Sight words are called that because by teaching children to recognize these words on sight, you are dramatically increasing their ability to read and comprehend the materials they are given. It also makes it easier for them to learn new vocabulary words, since they can use the sight words they already know to put the new words in context. It is hard to overstate the importance of sight words in early lessons on reading and writing.

The most commonly used list of sight words is known as the Dolch Sight Words list. This list was compiled by Dr. Edward William Dolch, an educator in the 1930s and 1940s. He studied all of the literature of the time for children, and put together a list, by age group, of the most commonly occurring words to appear. The full list has 220 of what are known as “service words” plus an additional 95 high-frequency nouns, spread out among the age-appropriate lists. The full list, once learned, makes up as much as 80% of the words found in children’s literature even today, and as much as 50% of the words found in adult literature.

For pre-k students, the list of Dolch Sight Words they should be focusing on learning and memorizing are:

Once your child has learned all the words in this list, they are one step ahead on their journey to full literacy. This is a solid foundation that can then be built on over time, as they continue to grow and learn. For anyone who wants to teach their child an early love of reading, this list and creating a foundation of understanding is the best place to start.
