Daycare Shares Tips to Make Car Trips With the Whole Family a Whole Lot of Fun!

Posted on 05-28-2016

Summer is almost here and travel plans are coming together. As your distant vacation begins to come into focus, you start visualizing the journey from Point A to Point B and panic strikes. Potty training toddlers at Rest stops? Preschool and elementary children on a ten-hour car ride? Skipping nap times and arguing about what toys they can carry in their backpacks? You begin to wonder what you were thinking. No need to ditch your fun and fancy plans for a stay-cation just yet. At Kids R Kids Learning Academy in Valrico, we understand the challenges you face as you work to create a fun and stimulating experience for your whole family. In our daycare and after school programs, we utilize loads of creative learning activities that masquerade as just plain fun. And since we love watching families enjoy their time together, we’ve put together some tips to help make your road trip a little more fun and a little less stressful.

Planning ahead always makes things run more smoothly and although these ideas may take a little pre-planning, the return on investment will be huge.

Make a Travel Binder. For each child, complete with a map of the trip, fun activities and a sure-fire trick to keep the markers from getting lost in the black hole between the seats. Erika from livingwellmom.com put these together for her kids and she was gracious enough to share the details. Check them out here.

Give “Road Trip” presents. Nothing fancy or expensive allowed! Wrap up Stickers, coloring books, Matchbox cars, tiny toy figurines or anything else you can find at the Dollar Store and hand them out throughout the trip. Everybody loves a surprise and kids are always excited to have a new toy or activity to pique their interest.

Snacks. Snacks. Snacks! So, this might seem like a no-brainer, but this is a very important element of a road trip. Don’t just pack the snacks in a big bag or box, get creative and make it fun. Whether the kids go with you to pick out some favorite goodies or you keep it a surprise, presentation can make all the difference. Create a special “pack” for each family member (think old wipes box, fishing tackle boxes, or even having each member decorate their own personal shoe box) and load it up with their favorite treats. Then, once you’re on the road, you can set a schedule and everyone can enjoy one or two treats at a time. Try to balance the sugary snacks with some savory treats like pretzels, cheese sticks, mixed nuts or bagels, to avoid the sugar rush and subsequent crash. Another fun way to mix it up is to have each child make their own snack necklace. See how here.

Make a Mess-Control Pack. Nothing kills the fun like a major spill or an unexpected bout of car sickness. Here’s where some advance planning can really save the day. Gather these items in a handy little bag and keep it in close reach to cut any trouble off at the pass.

  • Wet wipes
  • Paper towels
  • Trash bags
  • Zip lock bags
  • Spill-proof snack cups for tiny fingers
  • Sippy Cups or closed containers
  • Bucket or sturdy plastic bag (for unexpected car sickness)
  • Play Road Trip Games. I’m sure we’ve all played some version of I-Spy or the Alphabet game, but times are changing and the options are plentiful. We’re not talking about a tablet, DVD or app-fest. Find some good, old-fashioned, laugh out loud together, friendly competition-inducing games.
